In developing countries mental and psychosocial problems are widespread. Many people suffer from depression, addiction and domestic violence, particularly in countries disrupted by war, poverty and disaster. Yet, hardly any mental health care is available for these populations. In some African countries there is only one psychiatrist per one million people and a serious lack of trained nurses and social workers. According to a WHO report published in 2007, a majority of developing countries spend less than 1% of their health budgets on mental health care.
Global Initiative on Psychiatry, HealthNet TPO and Estuar join forces to raise awareness on mental health as an important developmental aid issue. With support of the European Commission and NCDO the Mental Health Battle 2009-2010 will take place in four European countries: Bulgaria, Lithuania, The Netherlands and Romania.
We invite students and mental health professionals to enter the Mental Health Battle, and write a paper with inventive solutions for dilemma’s concerning mental health in developing countries. The winners will be invited to visit the HealthNet TPO mental health programme in Burundi in spring 2010.
